Thursday Aug 12, 2021
This episode of AR:T ROUTE RADIO has a ripple effect in the vibrant colours and artists on the walls and the connections between mural towns and the people who create them. In the art studio is Sydney Leigh Black, one of the organisers of the extremely successful Nelson International Mural Festival. This mural town has deep roots and also strong ties to the work of Loughery’s students who are now some of the masters of their mural craft on the vibrant walls in Nelson BC, Canada. There is much energy that goes into the creation of mural towns and Sydney is a mural warrior in the work she does.

Talking to the Sunflowers with Artist Jo Petty #006
Tuesday Jul 06, 2021
Tuesday Jul 06, 2021
Connecting with other creatives is a key part of a strong art practice. During Covid times what is an artist’s haven and creative secluded heaven became a jail of lack of choices to connect.
The mastery of creative skills does not help learn new digital skills. Remembering what being a student is like is a good reminder as we masters mentor and now need mentored in exchange.
Digital connections proved to be a window into each other’s studios and a thread that ties us all together that has become the new digital zoom party line. And as always exchange is connection and a mastery of building each other up in hard times!
Take a listen as Host Artist Michelle Loughery and Guest Artist Jo Petty connect on AR:T ROUTE Radio ‘Talking to the Sunflowers’ party line.
"My theme in life and art has always been "Every Mark Matters" and my goal is to impart the inspiration of that statement to every person I instruct and with whom I work.
Art is an energy that is alive and all around us. It comes through the artist or the medium and when a viewer acknowledges or responds to that energy it is one of the greatest rewards." - Artist Jo Petty.
Jo Petty has had international shows in Tokyo, Bifuka and Sapporo. Petty was also part of the team that painted a mural for the Hollywood feature film, An Unfinished Life. Learn more about Artist Jo Petty here https://www.jopetty.com

Canadian Sunflowers - A Daughter’s Story with guest Anne Sadelain #005
Wednesday Feb 24, 2021
Wednesday Feb 24, 2021
Michelle Loughery spends time with Anne Sadelain of Edmonton, Alberta on AR:T ROUTE Radio. At 16, Anne Sadelain’s father lied about his age to get into Canada. Five years later, in 1915, he was picked up by police in Vancouver and brought to an internment camp in Morrissey, B.C. Anne is one of the children of the camp survivors and her father; Vasyl (William) Doskoch was a Morrissey internee.
Anne speaks about her father's harsh treatment and what an impact it had on the family to have their father imprisoned in such an unjust fashion. She explains also that Vasyl was eventually moved to a camp at Kapuskasing in Northern Ontario when Morrissey was finally shut down. There he was forced to remain in what only can be described as deliberate post-war slave labour until he was finally released in 1920, 1-2 years after war's end.
Sadelain said, “My father committed no crime and posed no threat to the country. Instead, he was locked up because he was Ukrainian.”
Research and Immigrant Song music Andrea Malysh.
About Canada's first national internment operations. "During Canada's first national internment operations of 1914 to 1920 thousands of men, women and children were branded as "enemy aliens." Many were imprisoned. Stripped of what little wealth they had, forced to do heavy labour in Canada's hinterlands, they were also disenfranchised and subjected to other state sanctioned censures not because of anything they had done but only because of where they had come from, who they were."
Quoted from “www.internmentcanada.ca”
Canadian War Museum - The Internment of Ukrainian Canadians. At the outset of war in August 1914, the Canadian government quickly enacted the federal War Measures Act (WMA). The Act’s sweeping powers permitted the government to suspend or limit civil liberties in the interest of Canada’s protection, including the right to incarcerate “enemy aliens”.
“Enemy Aliens” and Internment Operations
The term “enemy alien” referred to the citizens of states legally at war with Canada who resided in Canada during the war. Under the authority of the WMA, Canada interned 8,579 enemy aliens in 24 receiving stations and internment camps from 1914-1920. Otter classified 3,138 as prisoners of war, while the others were civilians. The majority of those interned were of Ukrainian descent, targeted because Ukraine was then split between Russia (an ally) and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, an enemy of the British Empire. In addition to those placed in camps, another 80,000 enemy aliens, again mostly Ukrainians, were forced to carry identity papers and to report regularly to local police offices.

Wednesday Jan 27, 2021
At AR:T ROUTE Radio we tell untold stories. Important wall stories of history that remind us to not repeat past mistakes. "Art is a never ending story of humanity." We all have a story that will break your heart, and by sharing and connecting to the past we can build a stronger future. Join Master Artist Michelle Loughery and guest Lana O’Brien in episode #004 as they TAKE IT TO THE WALL ...
Seeds of Hope: A Story of Ukrainian Internment in Canada.
From 1914-1920 the field now known as MacDonald Park, and home to W.L. Seaton Secondary school, was an Internment Camp for Ukrainian and Eastern European citizens. Our show tells the story of this little known history from three perspectives: those imprisoned, those responsible for the camps from local authorities to the Canadian Government, and the citizens of Vernon with their varying points of view.
The show was created by 12 Seaton students, under the direction of Lana O’Brien, over many weeks. Using theatre, it tells both local stories and stories from across Canada in a beautiful live production that was professionally filmed and edited for sharing in a digital medium.
Like all theatres around the world, our theatre company has been significantly impacted by COVID-19, and the streaming will be by donation.
Lana O’Brien is a Teaching Artist - School District 22, Vernon BC,
Artistic and Technical Director - 27th Street Theatre Company, and Co-ordinator - Good Will Shakespeare Festival.

Michelle and Master Artist Roy Henry Vickers have a digital coffee conversation about the importance of art in the healing of the world after Covid. Listening to our ancestors will help create a path of healing and connection.
“A pipe carrier walks in the ways of the four directions, which are common to all nations in the world: teacher, healer, visionary and leader,” says Roy. “We always have the pipe in our minds so that when we get into situations where we feel like we’re off kilter or off centre or, we can always go back to this place of peace and centre ourselves, ask the creator to help us be who we are.” Roy Henry Vickers

AR:T ROUTE RADIO -TAKE IT TO THE WALL
BIG ART, BIG WALLS, BIG STORIES! When Walls Talk! Join Master Artist Michelle Loughery and friends, as they bring community mural art to life.
Climb the digital scaffolding and listen as walls reveal their secrets of over 30 years of mural projects globally. Her stories are inclusive, revealing and raw. The invisible spaces between the cities and the systems came to life while Loughery was perched on scaffolding for three decades. These are the stories from those walls. Conversations about connecting and collaborating with creatives and community.
This is the artist view of those walls and the conversations of those who were part of the giant canvases. Though many assisted Loughery and allowed the projects to gain momentum, Loughery was the creative force that fueled the vision. Now decades later, she is still deemed a pioneer by those who aided in the projects, by the artists and the youth, and by those who followed in her footsteps to pursue mural-based art in other communities.
The award-winning projects were also considered a monumental success based on tourism and socio-economic impacts and legacies.
Loughery’s Wayfinder Mural Projects have helped communities raise millions of dollars, while connecting youth and elders to skills and their communities.
Soon, what began in a small rural coal mining town, picked up momentum and started a movement, and the dream of a connected highway mural trail called AR:T ROUTE Blue - Destination Mural Town. Her current Wayfinder Sunflower Project is connecting seniors and youth through digital and place-making art, and storytelling.
Join Michelle and guests as they “take it to the wall” through conversations about art and art as social change and so much more.
